Elearning Standard

To ensure that eLearning is an enriching experience, eLearning courses would need to be designed keeping in mind certain standards. eLearning standards ensure that the eLearning courses can be used in a very flexible manner.

eLearning standards are a system of common rules which govern the design and development of content, authoring software and Learning Management Systems. Systems and solutions which are designed complying with the eLearning standards are considered very effective in implementation. eLearning systems and solutions are designed to ensure that the training activity is cost-effective and efficient.

There are many eLearning standards which we need to understand

• AICC - AICC is an acronym for Aviation Industry CBT Committee. This is possibly the oldest eLearning standard which is practiced till date. This eLearning standard from the needs of aviation industry to create a common Computer Based Training System. • IMS - This is one of the popular eLearning standards whose primary focus is to concentrate on metadata. This would include metadata tagging of learning objects. • SCORM - SCORM is the acronym for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. This encompasses the Content Aggregation Model for Web-based learning and Run-time environment for learning objects. Best practices are taken from various eLearning standards to make up the SCORM eLearning standard. This is a comprehensive collection of different eLearning capabilities which ensure that eLearning systems could work on different operating systems and are accessible easily to the users.
  
  
• SingCore - An eLearning standard which focuses on Metadata. This standard had originated in Singapore and concentrates to tag learning objects. This is done to ensure that the learning objects can be reused. Systems built using this standard ensure that existing training materials can be used. This would enhance the effectiveness of the content.

eLearning standards are an effective guiding tool to the design and development of an eLearning solution or a system.
